Welcome to our community of Winnetka, Illinois! The first graders at North Shore Country Day School will take you on a walking tour of our village. We hope you enjoy your visit and we hope you will take us on a tour of your community by posting something on the blog!

Welcome to North Shore Country Day School! The first graders will take you on a tour of our school community stopping at some important things and places along the way. We hope you learn more about our school and we look forward to learning more about your schools.

The 2009-2010 first graders at North Shore Country Day School would like to introduce themselves to everyone who visits the blog. We wrote “I am” poems that should tell you more about us. Do you want to visit North Shore Country Day School or Winnetka and learn more about our community? You can without driving or flying by watching the videos that the first graders at North Shore Country Day School made. We took pictures of important places around our school and our community and wrote reports about these places. They read and recorded these reports and finally we put all of the pictures and reports together to make the movies. We were inspired to make these movies by our friends at North Elementary School in Lander, Wyoming. Please feel free to add pictures or movies of your school or your community onto our blog. We would love to learn more about your schools and communities too.

North Shore Country Day School

Winnetka

As a culminating experience in the study of our community, the first grade at North Shore Country Day School created Gold City! The children decided to build an urban community called Gold City. The “community members” were very generous with their gold and used it to make the world a better place by giving money to the poor, planting more trees, encouraging people to recycle etc.

The children chose what job they would like to have in Gold City and then transformed a shoe box into a place of business. They also made things such as stop signs, benches, trash cans, traffic lights, parks, lakes etc. that help a community to function.

The first grade parents visited Gold City to see the city and to hear a report written by each first grader that described what he or she did in the community, where their building was located, and why they liked living in the city. We hope you enjoy looking at the pictures of Gold City.

Welcome back to a new year 1^st graders in Winnetka, Illinois! We are so excited about continuing this project with you again this year. Here at North Elementary in Lander, Wyoming, we have been learning about what makes up communities also. We each chose an important “Community Career” and decided why we would like to have that job and why we wouldn’t like to have that job. Here are our findings…
