Inspired by the North Shore “Gold City” model, North Elementary’s students created a model of Main Street in Lander. It will be on display during parent/teacher conferences this week. Then, to finish this year’s study of communities, students will be delivering each of the model buildings to the actual places.

Tour of North Shore Country Day School and Winnetka
January 29, 2009 · 1 Comment
Do you want to visit North Shore Country Day School or Winnetka and learn more about our community? You can without driving or flying by watching the videos that the first graders at North Shore Country Day School made. We took pictures of important places around our school and our community and wrote reports about these places. They read and recorded these reports and finally we put all of the pictures and reports together to make the movies. We were inspired to make these movies by our friends at North Elementary School in Lander, Wyoming. Please feel free to add pictures or movies of your school or your community onto our blog. We would love to learn more about your schools and communities too.

Gold City
January 8, 2009 · 1 Comment
As a culminating experience in the study of our community, the first grade at North Shore Country Day School created Gold City! The children decided to build an urban community called Gold City. The “community members” were very generous with their gold and used it to make the world a better place by giving money to the poor, planting more trees, encouraging people to recycle etc.
The children chose what job they would like to have in Gold City and then transformed a shoe box into a place of business. They also made things such as stop signs, benches, trash cans, traffic lights, parks, lakes etc. that help a community to function.
The first grade parents visited Gold City to see the city and to hear a report written by each first grader that described what he or she did in the community, where their building was located, and why they liked living in the city. We hope you enjoy looking at the pictures of Gold City.

Welcome back to a new year 1st graders in Winnetka, Illinois! We are so excited about continuing this project with you again this year. Here at North Elementary in Lander, Wyoming, we have been learning about what makes up communities also. We each chose an important “Community Career” and decided why we would like to have that job and why we wouldn’t like to have that job. Here are our findings…

We Are All Alike, We Are All Different
October 13, 2008 · No Comments
Here are some poems that the first grade students at North Shore wrote about themselves. Hopefully we have encouraged you and your class to write similar poems and to post them on this blog. Our hope is that the children will be able to see that they may be different in some ways but very similar in other ways to a child in a different state or country. Enjoy!

Who We Are
September 25, 2008 · 4 Comments
Our goal for this project is to allow children to understand that they are part of a global community and that the members of this global community are alike and different in many ways. We would like to discuss a number of different topics such as ourselves, our schools, our communties, our countries, our weather and any other topics that other members of this project would like to discuss. We are hoping that a number of schools from different parts of the United States and from different countries will join the project and will respond to the questions or projects that we and other schools post.
We will be using a wiki at the following website: nsfirstgrade.wikispaces.com for members of the project to post possible questions or projects to work on. You can also see a tutorial on the wiki on how to join our blog and become an author. If you have any questions, please email Kyle Jones at kjones@nscds.org or Hillary Wirtz at hwirtz@nscds.org.
We hope that you enjoy getting to know more about us, as we are looking forward to getting to know you. We are excited to make friends across our country and the world and to learn about different people and the different ways that people live. This is us, the first grade class at North Shore Country Day School.
